Man Fighting For Life After ATV Hit-Run Crash Is Former Montclair State University VP

A District man is on the long road to recovery after suffering a traumatic brain injury in a violent ATV hit-and-run that nearly took his life.

Jack Shannon was walking along the sidewalk in the 600 block of Michigan Avenue, NE, late in the afternoon on Thursday, Feb. 13, when an ATV sped down the walkway and struck him from behind, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The driver fled the scene, leaving Shannon critically injured.

He was rushed to an area hospital by DC Fire and EMS, where doctors performed life-saving surgery.

Shannon remained in the ICU for 10 days on a ventilator before waking up and beginning his recovery in inpatient rehab, where he continues to undergo therapy.

"We are now so happy to share that he is awake and continues to make tremendous progress with his strength and responsiveness," his family said.

"He still has a long road ahead of him but he's a fighter and has always been a bit of an overachiever, so we know he will continue to make all of us proud."

Shannon's recovery journey is far from over, but his family and friends have rallied behind him, launching a GoFundMe campaign, “Support Jack’s Journey to Recovery #ShannonStrong”, to help cover ongoing medical expenses.

The fundraiser raised nearly all of its stated $40,000 goal in just three days.

"To help support Jack during this time our goal is to raise money to help with his continued care," organizers wrote.

"Every little bit helps, whether it’s donating, sharing this with others, or just sending good energy our way."

According to his LinkedIn account, Shannon attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School, was a former Vice President at Montclair State University in New Jersey and is a former President and CEO of East Baltimore Development Inc.

"Just over two weeks ago, my husband Jack was the victim of a hit-and-run accident," Denise Shannon posted on Facebook over the weekend.

"I’m in awe of his strength as he begins his rehabilitation," she added. "If you know Jack, please continue to pray for him, donate if you are able to and share his story."

"If you can give, thank you. And if you can’t, that’s okay too—just sharing this or sending some love our way is more than enough.”
